Former LSU All-American and current SEC Network analyst Marcus Spears commented on the Tigers’ current coaching situation following Les Miles’ termination. Spears appeared on the Paul Finebaum Show Monday to lend his opinion of the current state of the program.

“It depends on how you look at it,” Spears said of LSU’s outlook for the rest of the season. “Ed Orgeron is playing with house money. If they don’t have what’s considered a successful season — I think nine wins would be a successful season — people are going to say ‘okay, we’re in transition mode.’ If they win out they’ll say, ‘man, look at the job Ed Orgeron did, now who’s going to be the next head coach.

“I think right now the best possible forecast for LSU is that Ed Orgeron is able to…and before I say that, with this, Ed alluded to in his press conference how much they wanted to change how they ran the football team. But it’s not something that’s totally out of the norm when you think about it. If we can see it as fans, as analysts, as people around the program that things need to change offensively, obviously the coaches within the staff can see it.”

Miles was fired four games into his 12th season with the program. He led the Tigers to a 114-34 (62-28 SEC) record during his tenure, which included a national championship in 2007, as well as two SEC Championships and BCS Championship Game appearances (2007, 2011).

Spears, who played at LSU prior to Miles’ arrival, said he wasn’t surprised about his school’s decision to part ways with the SEC’s longest-tenured coach, which has been rumored to take place since last season.

“It was going to happen,” Spears said. “I told you on [SEC Nation] Les Miles may not make it half the season if he doesn’t change his offensive philosophy. Even that being said, if they were 4-0 right now would have won against Auburn, which was very doable, won against Wisconsin, which was very doable, you still didn’t like what they did. It would have prolonged the inevitable.”
