It was the Nick Fitzgerald show on Saturday, as Mississippi State hosted the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns and won 56-10, starting Joe Moorhead’s first season in charge with a 3-0 record.

Louisiana actually got the scoring started in Starkville, with a 38-yard field goal by Kyle Pfau on the first possession.

It was all Mississippi State from there, as the Bulldogs ripped off seven straight touchdowns, bringing the final score to 56-3. Fitzgerald ran in two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, one from one yard out and the other from 10 yards.

Running back Aeris Williams got in on the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run, making it 21-3 with less than 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Fitzgerald ran in another touchdown in the second quarter, and threw his first one of the night hitting Stephen Guidry for a 39-yard score, and the halftime scoreboard read 35-3.

Fitzgerald added a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown in the third quarter before being replaced by backup Keytaon Thompson. Fitzgerald finished the game with 243 yards on 14 for 21 passing, along with 2 touchdowns in the air and no interceptions. The quarterback did the real damage on the ground however, and Louisiana had no answer for his 107 yards and 4 touchdowns on 15 carries.

That is the second time Fitzgerald rushed for 4 touchdowns in a game in his Mississippi State career, which makes him only the 3rd SEC player to do so in multiple games in the last 20 seasons.

Keytaon Thompson entered the game in the fourth quarter and ran in a 16-yard touchdown with 4:22 remaining to make it 56-10.

One sight Mississippi State fans were certainly not happy to see was senior cornerback Jamal Peters, who went down with an injury in the first half and was seen wearing a knee brace and crutches on the sideline.

Next up, Mississippi State is on the road against a Kentucky team that has momentum, especially after ending the 31-year losing streak against Florida in Week 2.
