When identifying Missouri’s potential redshirt candidates, it should come as no surprise that there are multiple possibilities on the defensive line.

The program’s success in churning out NFL-caliber talent in the area, with the line affectionately dubbed #DLineZou, has allowed the Tigers to attract top talent in recent seasons. The 2016 recruiting class is no different, and it offers the prospect of delicious results in the future.

That means it’s likely some must wait to make their presence felt. Meanwhile, look to quarterback and the secondary as other areas with depth where Missouri might redshirt promising names.

Here’s a closer look at some who could be redshirted this season:

Micah Wilson, QB

Missouri seems set at quarterback with Drew Lock as the likely starter, plus Marvin Zanders and Jack Lowary behind him. A redshirt season would help Wilson, a three-star recruit, in his development as the Tigers form an identity in Josh Heupel’s offense, which remains a mystery to many. Wilson’s moment to compete for playing time should come at a later date.

Tre Williams, DE

At 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, Williams has a bunch of potential. Missouri hasn’t been shy about declaring its anticipation to see him on campus, calling Williams a “beast,” a “game-changer” and a “playmaker” on the program’s Signing Day website. Still, the Tigers are loaded at defensive end. Expect Williams, dubbed a four-star talent by Rivals.com, to be a factor in the future.

Markell Utsey, DT

As in Williams’ case, Utsey likely must wait his turn to make an impact until a logjam of talent clears in front of him. He’s 6-4, 285 pounds, and if he adds more strength to his profile, he could become a presence to be reckoned with on the defensive line. Utsey, a three-star prospect according to 247Sports.com’s composite, will look to continue Missouri’s recent tradition of standout linemen.

DeMarkus Acy, S

Anthony Sherrils and Thomas Wilson should see plenty of playing time. Ronnell Perkins, Tavon Ross and Cam Hilton, who moved to the position after playing as a slot receiver last season, should be available to provide depth. That means Acy, a three-star prospect, could redshirt.
