Ole Miss offensive lineman Rod Taylor’s shoplifting arrest could’ve easily been an accident, but new information implies that may not be the case.

According to the Clarion-Ledger’s Daniel Paulling revealed new details about the incident on Tuesday based on a police report obtained by the publication.

In that report, Oxford Police Department officer Steven Lewis wrote that Walmart loss prevention employee Gary Ferguson told him that Taylor — who was in a self-checkout line — allegedly scanned certain items and paid for them but placed other items not paid for in plastic bags in his shopping cart intentionally.

The report shows that the items in question were valued at $41.53 and were two cans of baked beans, onions, potatoes, a 12 pack of grape soda, Ocean Spray juice, hamburger meat and one bag of charcoal.

Taylor told Lewis as he was being transported to the Lafayette County Detention Center that he was distracted by a phone call about football while ringing up his items, but Lewis said he didn’t see Taylor on the phone.

The 6-foot-3, 320-pound junior’s day in court is May 25 and faces a first-offense charge of shoplifting.

Last season, Taylor played in 10 games while making two starts at right guard for the Rebels. He missed three games (Tennessee-Martin, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State) due to a shoulder injury and is recovering from offseason surgery that kept him out of the spring.
