The Ole Miss Rebels continued their spring practice season with an open practice on Saturday, and afterward head coach Hugh Freeze spoke to the media about the ongoing quarterback competition in Oxford.

Junior college transfer Chad Kelly and rising sophomores Devante Kincade and Ryan Buchanan are all competing for the right to replace three-year starter Bo Wallace under center for the Rebels, but to this point in the spring Freeze has remained adamant that the competition is wide open. He reminded the media of that when asked about his quarterbacks on Saturday.

“You’re not going to get that,” Freeze told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger when asked who was leading the competition. (You can see a video of Freeze’s media availability, courtesy of the Clarion-Ledger, above.) “You all can keep asking that but there’s not going to be a leader. We’re going to go all the way into about the middle of fall camp. So we can keep asking it but that’s what the answers going to be.”

So understanding there’s a good chance Freeze won’t name a starter this spring, what did we learn about the Ole Miss quarterbacks from Saturday’s open practice?

“A lot of good things out there today,” Freeze said. “I think for the most part the offense took care of the football. … Red zone looked pretty efficient when we were down there.

“I actually thought all three (quarterbacks) did some good things,” Freeze continued. “I’m standing back behind them and they went through the right progression most of the time. I thought we missed a few reads in the run game but that happens. I thought they all three had solid days.”

The Rebels head coach did single out Kelly when asked about his deep ball accuracy. Top wideout Laquon Treadwell praised Kelly for his deep throws earlier this spring

“His arm strength is pretty dang good. He gets it out there and he puts the right amount of air under it. We threw some good deep balls with him today. …  Chad’s arm is a little stronger than what we’ve been used to.”

Freeze also shared an update on Treadwell’s recovery from severe leg injuries that cut his 2014 season short. The head coach seemed pleased with Treadwell’s recovery but is erring on the side of caution with his offense’s most dynamic weapon.

“He wants to be out there. Probably could go some but we just haven’t let him,” Freeze said. “… I’d say he’s probably about 80 percent. But we’re going to hold him out the rest of the spring as far as the contact stuff.”
