After a bleak early slate, Week 9 wrapped up with some dramatic games in the SEC and around the country.

Looking back at Saturday’s schedule of games, let’s take a trip around the country to the five best environments in Week 9:

1. Tiger Stadium, LSU

There’s not a better scene in college football than 102,000 strong in Death Valley at night. It gets even better when ESPN’s “College GameDay” is in town, and Baton Rouge lived up to its billing Saturday morning and in primetime. The purple and yellow faithful were hellbent on giving then-No. 3 Ole Miss a difficult environment and they did just that. The Bayou Bengals engineered a scoring drive late and two defensive stops to seal the upset. Then this happened:

 2. Spartan Stadium, Michigan State  A crowd of over 75,000 descended on East Lansing to see Michigan continue its downward fall after the loss to in-state rival Michigan State. Big Blue head coach Brady Hoke apologized for his team planting a spear at midfield pregame. Meanwhile, Sparty had a plane flying over the stadium with a banner that read: “U of M – Keep Brady Hoke – Plzzz.” Hopefully fans got into town Friday night, because reports have it that Spartan hoops coach Tom Izzo dressed up as Gene Simmons for Midnight Madness. A great scene in the Big 10, though.

 3. Beaver Stadium, Penn State

Few scenes are as picturesque on an Autumn Saturday night than Beaver Stadium, home to the Penn State Nittany Lions. State College, nestled quaintly in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains turns into a nightmare of an environment for opposing teams on Saturdays. A “white-out” of more than 107,000 people has become tradition against top-tier Big 10 opponents. James Franklin’s team gave Ohio State all it could handle, but eventually fell in overtime. How about this sight, though?

 4. Commonwealth Stadium, Kentucky Despite the construction, Wildcat fans showed up Saturday afternoon as the nation’s top-ranked team in the country came calling. It was the first time since 2007 that a No. 1 team made a trip to the Bluegrass State, and Kentucky responded with a sell-out of over 62,000 fans. When the renovations are completed, Commonwealth Stadium will be as beautiful a venue as their will be in the SEC, but this view on Saturday afternoon was pretty good.

 5. Neyland Stadium, Tennessee

Sure, Rocky Top made the list largely because Lane Kiffin returned with two police officers to escort him. But Alabama-Tennessee’s a historic rivalry and Neyland Stadium on the Third Saturday in October is the place to be. ESPN’s Brock Huard raved about the East Tennessee atmosphere with 100,000-plus fans in bright orange. Even Alabama fans respected the energy Saturday night.
