The coaching carousel has claimed a number of SEC coaches this offseason, including two of the conference’s best coordinators: Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and Mississippi State defensive coordinator Geoff Collins.

Bobo left Athens to take over as the head coach at Colorado State. Collins made what Dan Mullen considered a “lateral move” to take over as DC at Florida. But which of their former teams will miss their departed coordinator more in the coming year?

We asked our SDS staffers that very question. Here’s what they had to say:

WHICH COORDINATOR IS A BIGGER LOSS FOR HIS TEAM — GEOFF COLLINS OR MIKE BOBO?

Brad Crawford (@BCrawfordSDS): Mike Bobo

Mike Bobo’s the bigger loss in my opinion. Some Georgia fans are glad to see him leave and I feel that’s unwarranted, a result of a couple of head-scratching red zone playcalls in memorable losses that have been placed under the microscope over the years. Despite being limited at the quarterback position this fall with fifth-year senior Hutson Mason, the Bulldogs still averaged an SEC-best 41.7 points per game and Bobo did a fantastic job managing carries for Georgia’s plethora of backfield talent. Known for his well-timed playaction gambles, Bobo’s a risk-taker and an above-average recruiter who gets players to believe in his system. Colorado State is getting one of college football’s best offensive coordinators to lead its football program.

Ethan Levine (@ELevineSDS): Geoff Collins

Both coordinators will prove to be huge losses for their respective former teams, but Collins is the bigger loss. Bobo is an excellent offensive coordinator who has led some explosive offenses in his time at UGA. Still, Bobo also achieved excellence as a coordinator by coaching some of the SEC’s best talents in recent memory, including Todd Gurley, Aaron Murray, A.J. Green and others. He did all this while serving an offensive-minded head coach in Mark Richt. Collins, meanwhile, has had to do more with less, and he was truly the engineer of the defense while serving under offensive-minded head coach Dan Mullen. Bobo cashed in on Georgia’s talent, but Collins built MSU’s “psycho defense” through creative recruiting and scheming. Richt will play a huge role in maintaining Georgia’s offensive potency next year, but Mississippi State must make a great hire to salvage the nation’s best red zone defense from 2014. Thus, Collins was more valuable to his former team and will serve as the greater loss between the two coordinators.

Jordan Cox (@Jordan_Cox): Geoff Collins

The departed Mississippi State defensive coordinator did a fantastic job developing talent on his defense, especially along the front seven. With the likes of Benardrick McKinney, Preston Smith, Jamerson Love and more, Collins built one of the best defenses in the SEC in 2014. It could be argued Bobo underachieved with the level of talent with which he was entrusted at Georgia. The Bulldogs’ run game was prolific this season, but the passing game left much to be desired. With players such as Todd Gurley, Knowshon Moreno, Matthew Stafford and A.J. Green, Georgia’s production on offense under Bobo left many scratching their heads. For that reason, I think it will be easier for a new coordinator to step in and have success in Athens. The caliber of defense Collins built at Mississippi State will be tough to replicate next season with the turnover on the defensive side of the football.

Christopher Smith (@CSmithSDS): Neither

Both are good, not great, coordinators. Mike Bobo wasn’t the most important coordinator at Georgia, and the Bulldogs produce NFL talent pretty consistently, especially on offense. It’s on Jeremy Pruitt to leverage what should be a fierce pass rush in 2015 to give Nick Chubb and the offense some help. Mississippi State fielded a terrific, unheralded defense in 2013, but needed an Egg Bowl upset just to make a bowl game and save head coach Dan Mullen’s job. Only with Dak Prescott progressing to first-team All-SEC form did Mississippi State become a true contender. Whether or not Prescott returns to Starkville will influence the Bulldogs’ 2015 outlook tenfold the absence of Collins.

Drew Laing (@DLaingSDS): Mike Bobo

I would say Mike Bobo, simply because of the time he’s been there. Collins had been at MSU since 2013, but the biggest losses for them will be the players (Benardrick McKinney, Preston Smith, etc.) and not Collins. Bobo was the OC at UGA since 2006 and the relationships he built throughout the Southeast and with his players is likely unmatched on the UGA coaching staff with the exception of Mark Richt. Georgia fans get fed up with Bobo in some aspects, but overall, he did a lot for the program. Fortunately for UGA, the ‘Dawgs have the talent coming back to compensate for the loss of Bobo, but make no mistake, there will void in the program with his departure.
