The SEC is a place where legends are born. Each year there are new players who captivate football fans in the south with historically incredible plays/games/seasons, and fans eat it up with overwhelming joy and pride in their favorite school.

Even though college players can only stay on campus 3-5 years, one magical season can turn a student-athlete into a lifelong hero in that community. Just ask Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott what last season did for his image and how it impacted his life in the small town of Starkville? He’s gone from nice guy and nice talent to rockstar in his own backyard.

So what we at SDS are wondering is who will be this season’s Dak Prescott? Who in the SEC will have a season so memorable in 2015 that we’ll still be talking about it and reflecting upon it in 2035 or even 2055?

The SDS staffers gave their input. Check out which names they dropped in the discussion:

WHICH SEC STAR WILL HAVE A 2015 SEASON WE’LL STILL REMEMBER IN 2035?

Brad Crawford (@BCrawfordSDS): Lorenzo Carter, LB, Georgia

I apologize if I sound like a broken record because I’ve mentioned this player’s name a ton this offseason, but I really think Georgia’s Lorenzo Carter is in for a huge sophomore season, due in part to the Bulldogs being my way-too-early 2015 SEC champion pick. Other than Ole Miss at the opposite end of the SEC and perhaps Tennessee, I can’t think of a roster with this much talent defensively from top to bottom. Carter’s a player whose numbers will improve dramatically with more reps and he’s talented enough to lead the league in sacks off the edge. He’s gotten faster since his freshman season ended and packed on 25 pounds to a near NFL-ready frame. In two years, Carter will be a first-round pick and I think his upcoming sophomore season will be his best under Jeremy Pruitt.

Christopher Smith (@CSmithSDS): Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia

It’s a near-impossible question. But I think Georgia will win the SEC in 2015 — not just the East Division. And the trio of rush linebackers will cancel each other out to an extent when we’re talking legacy 20 years later. I don’t trust Sony Michel or Keith Marshall to stay healthy, and I think new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will prescribe a heavy dose of Chubb for the Bulldogs this season.

Jon Cooper (@JonSDS): Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU

While I think Nick Chubb may have the better overall season, Leonard Fournette is the one everyone will be talking in 2015 and in 2035. He’s the Adrian Peterson-type freak who will have a big career at LSU and the next level. Hopefully his career resembles that of Todd Gurley without the ACL injury. Fournette is in a system that’s conducive for keeping running backs healthy and tread on the tires. Fournette is the one everyone will be talking about 20 years from now. Let’s just hope it’s for living up to the hype.

Ethan Levine (@ELevineSDS): Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Ole Miss

Nkemdiche has been a physical force at the heart of the Ole Miss defense the last two seasons, and although his numbers don’t reflect it he’s made a tremendous impact since 2013 by generating a push up the middle and occupying blockers to free up teammates. Marquis Haynes, an undersized freshman last season who recorded 7.5 sacks off the edge, is one of many examples of how Nkemdiche is helping his defensive unit without logging the numbers one would expect from a former No. 1 overall recruit. However, 2015 is Nkemdiche’s junior year, likely his last in Oxford before departing for the NFL as a probable first-round pick. I just have this gut feeling he’s going to make this year count. Look for Nkemdiche to make the leap from impactful tackle to dominant, unstoppable force ala Ndamukong Suh from 2009, when he was a Heisman finalist.
