Unfortunately, ESPN hasn’t rolled out an SEC version of NFL RedZone for the conference’s new network. It would fit well on the alternate channel and would’ve rocked this season. Instead, we’ll keep track of red zone stats for you each week.

OFFENSIVE RED ZONE STATISTICS

South Carolina maintained its spot as the SEC’s best red zone offense, scoring on all seven of its red zone trips in a 41-10 win over Furman on Saturday. The Gamecocks have scored on all but one of their red zone trips in 2014, although they rank in the bottom half of the conference in red zone possessions with just 28 in seven games.

Surprisingly, Florida has the SEC’s second-best red zone offense, scoring on 21 of 22 trips to the red zone in 2014. However, the Gators’ 22 red zone possessions are tied for the second-fewest in the SEC ahead of only Vanderbilt, and their 59 percent touchdown rate in the red zone ranks in the bottom third of the conference as well.

Vanderbilt and Mississippi State were both off last week, so they remain tied as the SEC’s worst red zone offenses with a success rate of just 80 percent. The Commodores’ 15 trips to the red zone are by far the fewest of any team in the conference, as are their eight red zone touchdowns (every other team has at least 22 trips and at least 11 touchdowns this season).

Mississippi State, meanwhile, is tied for third in the SEC with 30 red zone trips on the season, but the Bulldogs have been held scoreless on six of those trips. The Bulldogs have the most plays of 20 or more yards in the SEC this season, which is why they are able to maintain an unbeaten record amid their red zone failures this season.

Alabama’s offense experienced the greatest improvement in its red zone numbers from last week, thanks to a 59-0 rout of Texas A&M. The Tide reached the red zone five times in Week 8, scoring on all five trips, including four touchdowns. Alabama’s red zone success rate is now up to 84.9 percent, and its touchdown rate is now up to 66.7 percent.

Kentucky suffered the biggest drop in red zone success following a 41-3 romp at the hands of LSU in Death Valley. The Wildcats reached the red zone just twice in Week 8, managing only a field goal out of those trips. The Cats’ success rate in the red zone is now below 82 percent, ranking ahead of only Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

DEFENSIVE RED ZONE STATISTICS

Mississippi State has been the SEC’s worst red zone offense, but it also boasts the SEC’s best red zone defense by a wide margin. The Bulldogs have held opponents scoreless on eight of 19 trips to the red zone, resulting in an opponent success rate of just 57.9 percent. No other team in the conference has allowed opponents to score less than 69 percent of the time.

Alabama has allowed the fewest opponent trips into the red zone with just 13 on the season, and opponents have scored on just 10 of those 13 trips. No one has allowed fewer touchdowns than the five the Tide has allowed in the red zone, however Ole Miss has allowed just five red zone touchdowns on 15 opponent trips inside the 20, resulting in the lowest opponent touchdown percentage of any defense in the SEC. Ole Miss is currently the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 10.6 points per game.

Tennessee has allowed the third-fewest opponent red zone drives in the SEC with just 16 in seven games, but it has allowed opponents to score on all 16 of those possessions, resulting in the worst defensive success rate in the conference.

South Carolina has allowed its opponents to reach the red zone more than any other team in the SEC, giving up 32 red zone possessions in seven games this season. The Gamecocks have also allowed 20 red zone touchdowns on the season, the most of any team in the conference, however their opponents’ red zone touchdown rate is only fifth-worst in the SEC.

Alabama experienced the greatest improvement in red zone defense from last week, just like its red zone offense. The Tide only allowed Texas A&M to reach the red zone once, and the Aggies failed to score on their lone possession inside the Alabama 20 yard line, resulting in the first shutout of Kevin Sumlin’s head coaching career.
