Syvelle Newton’s not a believer in the Gamecocks this season.

The former South Carolina quarterback says North Carolina’s up-tempo offense will cause problems for Jon Hoke’s new-look defense Thursday night and is unsure about Connor Mitch, Steve Spurrier’s recently-named starting quarterback, and his ability to lead the offense.

Newton, who worked on staff as a grad assistant last fall and saw Mitch first-hand, let it out during his appearance on WACH FOX57 out of Columbia this week.

“When I see Connor Mitch, great kid, but I see Tommy Beecher written all over him,” Newton told host Corey Miller. “I have to see it to believe it and right now, I’m not a believer, but I believe in coach Spurrier.”

Beecher, if you recall, transferred to Liberty for his final season in 2009 after falling from starter to scout team.

Ouch.

Newton, a multi-position threat for the Gamecocks in the mid-2000s, says second-teamer Perry Orth would be the better option against the Tar Heels and beyond.

“I love the way he throws the ball. He throws a nice tight spiral and catchable ball,” Newton said. “To see the new guy (Lorenzo) Nunez get out and make some plays would be something good. I think Carolina fans are hungry to see a guy come in and run like Connor Shaw and myself.”
