In need of pass-rush help, South Carolina added a major piece to its 2016 puzzle on Wednesday, winning a head-to-head battle with Georgia for four-star defensive end Jordan Smith.

The lanky 6-foot-6, 220-pounder out of Lithonia, Georgia announced his commitment to the Gamecocks during a signing ceremony at his school. He is South Carolina’s 13th player in the 2016 class and is the second Georgia native defensive lineman, joining Cecil Stallings.

Smith accumulated 18 tackles for loss and 12 sacks as a junior last season.

Gamecocks assistants Lorenzo Ward and Deke Adams provided the full-court press in getting Smith to commit. The greater Atlanta area has proven fertile in recent years for Ward who has already locked in multiple commitments from the Peach State this summer including four-star safety Marlon Character.

According to The Big Spur’s Tony Morrell, Smith is a candidate to graduate early arrive on campus in the spring.
