The Aggies scored a big win within the state of Texas on Wednesday by landing consensus five-star defensive tackle Daylon Mack.

He pulled out a Texas A&M hat from a blue bag after describing a “very tough decision.”

“It’s just a place that I felt at home at. The staff has always been good to me and my family,” Mack said on ESPNU.

The 6-foot-1, 330-pound Mack gives new defensive coordinator John Chavis a huge piece for the interior of the line to pair with outstanding sophomore-to-be pass rusher Myles Garrett.

“(My relationship with Chavis) was really good at LSU and it’s even better now that he’s at Texas A&M,” Mack said.

Texas A&M beat out TCU and Texas to sign Mack, holding onto him despite a roller coaster final two months.

Mack decommitted from the Aggies on Dec. 19, tweeting the next day that LSU and TCU were his top two schools. A&M fired Mark Snyder on Nov. 28, throwing the defensive recruiting for the team into uncertainty. Then A&M hired away Chavis from LSU in early January.

Mack hosted A&M, TCU and Texas at his home in January and visited to College Station and Austin before canceling an unofficial visit to Fort Worth. The losing team’s MVP at the Under Armour All-America game, the Gladewater (Texas) High School product is rated as the No. 4 defensive tackle in the country and the No. 14 overall player, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Known for his quick-twitch first step, scouting reports laud his quickness, but are careful to mention that he possesses the power to hold the point of attack as well. If he improves on his hands, he has a great chance to be a star all-around defensive tackle.
