Texas A&M and Kevin Sumlin finally are feeling the absence of Johnny Manziel.

The Aggies, after a 59-0 loss at Alabama, fell out of the Associated Press Top 25 and the Amway Coaches Poll for the first time since Sept. 30, 2012.

A&M had been ranked for more than two years, starting as the preseason No. 21 in the AP this year and climbing to No. 6. But three consecutive losses to teams currently ranked in the Top 10 have torpedoed the Aggies’ ranking.

Ironically, it was Johnny Football’s iconic 29-24 win in Tuscaloosa in November 2012 that put the program on the map nationally, thrusting Manziel to a Heisman Trophy. Two years later, while the quarterback now a rookie backup for the Cleveland Browns, the Aggies are nowhere near Alabama.

Texas A&M won at Ole Miss to move to 4-1 and debuted at No. 22. The team has been ranked ever since.

It’s difficult to imagine the current iteration beating Auburn, but if the team can regroup with an off week and a game against Louisiana-Monroe, an 8-4 regular season still seems obtainable. The Aggies finished 9-4 with a bowl win against Duke in 2013, ranking No. 18 in the final AP poll, and if things go well, a similar finish could happen this year.

It’s not shocking to see A&M unranked — the SEC West features four Top 5 teams — but a 5-0 start that thrust this team to No. 6, only to set up three consecutive losses and a freefall, was jolting.

Texas A&M (5-3, 2-3) is guaranteed to finish no worse than sixth in the seven-team SEC West, thanks to a comeback overtime win against Arkansas. It appears the Aggies will compete with LSU for the fifth spot in the division, which for now equates to a low-end Top 25 ranking.
