Walk-ons aren’t necessarily always depth-chart fillers for football teams. Sometimes, they become difference-makers.

On Saturday, Texas A&M awarded scholarships to three walk-ons according to 247 Sports. Two of the three are either listed as starting already or are in a battle for the job.

Junior tight end Tanner Schorp was one of the recipients, and Schorp was the starting tight end in the spring. The Aggies didn’t have a scholarship player at the position at the time, and now, Schorp is listed as an “OR” starter with junior transfer Kalvin Cline.

For junior punter Shane Tripucka, the second recipient of a scholarship, he won the starting job this fall. Tripucka was an Under Armour All-American coming out of high school.

The third walk-on to receive a scholarship was sophomore linebacker Cullen Gillaspia. Gillaspia played in two games a year ago and recorded one tackle.

According to Brian Perroni of 247 Sports, Gillaspia has fought his way onto the newest two-deep and is a vocal motivational leader on the Aggies’ defense.

Texas A&M begins its 2016 season at 3:30 p.m. EST on Sept. 3 at home against No. 16 UCLA.
