Tennessee freshman wide receiver Josh Malone is expected to see an increased role this weekend against No. 12 Georgia in Athens. Malone, who rated as a five-star prospect for the 2014 recruiting class, is expected to get more reps in the absence of Von Pearson and Josh Smith.

“He has responded well,” offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian said of Malone’s willingness to accept a  heavier load. “He has matured over the course of training camp, over the course of the season and continues to get better and better every week.”

Malone currently has five catches for 63 yards in limited playing time. In Week 3, the freshman recorded a season-best two catches for 23 yards against No. 4 Oklahoma in his road debut.

“The good thing about Josh is that he has grown every week,” said Azzanni. “He has gotten better every week. He went on the road to Oklahoma and made some plays for us.

“Oklahoma is not too shabby of a football team and he was able to go out there and hold his own … There is a difference between week one and week three, game one and game three. As long as I see another step up then I am happy. I want to see a rise all season. If I can do that then I am happy with Josh’s performance.”

Malone is no stranger to high expectations and a solid work ethic. While attending Station Camp High School, Malone gained the attention of several major programs early in his prep career due to his raw talent and size. By his junior season, the Bison wide receiver improved his route running and ball catching skills to become one of the top receiver prospects in the nation.

Malone possesses a combination of size and speed that will help him become a dominant force in the SEC. Outside of Marquez North, he is the most balanced threat remaining for Tennessee at the wide receiver position. While Pig Howard possesses speed and Jason Croom has size, Malone boasts both qualities and should become an elite playmaker as he gains experience.

It should come as no surprise if he sees a breakout performance against the Bulldogs. With Malone, Tennessee may have a star in the making that could shine bright this weekend.
