The Tennessee Volunteers defense enjoyed another dominant performance in Saturday’s 34-19 win over against Arkansas State. The Vols held the Red Wolves to a 4-of-17 third down efficiency and just seven points in the entire second half.

Arkansas State quarterback Fredi Knighten was finished with 166 yards and a touchdown on 21-of-34 passing. He was also the Red Wolves’ leading rusher with 65 yards, as the Arkansas State running backs struggled individually.

Freshman Owen Williams provided a spark to the young Tennessee defensive line. Williams recorded five tackles and two sacks after seeing playing time off the bench. Derek Barnett also contributed with three tackles, including one for loss. Curt Maggitt, who saw action as a defensive end in nickel formations, added four tackles.

A.J. Johnson enjoyed yet another monstrous performance with nine tackles (seven solo) and one pass break up. Jalen Reeves-Maybin added six tackles, including two for loss and a sack.

The Vols defensive backs also enjoyed a stellar game. Tres Houston led all Arkansas State receivers with just 48 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Tennessee’s defensive backs combined for four pass break ups and a fumble recovery.

The Vols have contained dual-threat quarterbacks in each of its first two games. Facing Utah State’s Chuckie Keeton and Arkansas State’s Knighten, the Vols have avoided being exposed by big play ability and held both players to pedestrian numbers. However, they will have a much tougher task facing Trevor Knight and No. 4 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Much like Keeton and Knighten, Knight possesses a dual-threat ability that makes him dangerous in and out of the pocket. Unlike the aforementioned players, the Oklahoma quarterback has a wide range of talent at skill positions and is favored to beat Tennessee. The Vols must continue their recent success in order to avoid a blowout against a tough Oklahoma team on the road.
