Picking out memorable plays in the Tennessee-Alabama series is something that could lead to some nostalgia for fans thinking about the storied history of the rivalry.

But a Throwback Thursday clip from the Vol Network featuring a coaches show with John Ward, Johnny Majors and Dale Jones may be among the best. Especially considering the graphics and production value from the mid-1980s.

The broadcaster, coach and linebacker recalled a turnover forced by Jones of Alabama QB Mike Shula in the 1985 Tennessee win at Legion Field. The Vols won, 16-14. It was Tennessee’s fourth straight win in the series.

After Tennessee’s star QB Tony Robinson left the game with an injury, Alabama grabbed the momentum and scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 16-14. The Crimson Tide drove into Tennessee territory for what would have been the go-ahead score, when Jones tipped a pass from Shula and caught it as he fell to the ground for a drive-killing interception.

“There’s no way you could describe it in words, the feeling you had on the field, John,” Majors said. “… Dales Jones just makes a tremendous individual effort. … To tip the ball and react so quickly, and catch the ball short, before it hits the ground.”

Jones also recovered a fumble late in the third quarter that set up Tennessee’s third field goal.

“I was just thinking about the fans and what great support they gave us down there,” Jones said. “It was just something for me to be in a game, and with our fans behind us, it was just tremendous.”

The series resumes at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in Neyland Stadium on CBS.
