Vanderbilt returns the bulk of last season’s team, and that can be looked at in one of two ways.

If your glass is half full, they Commodores return loads of young talent and are primed to build on last season’s experience.

If it is half empty, you’ll notice that Vanderbilt turned in a poor defense effort a year ago and a downright putrid offensive effort with many of the same players.

But with new coordinators in place on both sides of the ball, changes to the plan of attack are to be expected.

While he has been shy on revealing any sort of details about his depth chart, one thing Derek Mason has made clear in fall camp is that plenty of guys are going to get the opportunity to play.

Here is our best guess at what the two-deep might look like coming out of fall camp:

OFFENSE (multiple)

QB1: Johnny McCrary
QB2: Wade Freebeck

If the Commodores have decided on a quarterback, they aren’t saying. After spending most of the offseason talking about how he wanted to settle on one guy rather than shuffle through several like last season, Mason and new head coach Andy Ludwig are taking their time on making a choice. There is a good chance the team finds out soon, but the decision remains private until the season opener against Western Kentucky on Sept. 3.

RB1: Ralph Webb
RB2: Dallas Rivers

FB1: Dallas Rivers
FB2:
Ladarius Banks

Ralph Webb was the team’s top offense weapon a year and can be expected to again be a feature player in the new offense. Ludwig has mentioned on several occasions that Dallas Rivers is a player he likes a lot, both as a runner and a potential lead blocker.

WR1: Letavius Rayford
WR2: Kris Kentera

WR1: Trent Sherfield
WR2: Ronald Monroe

TE1: Steven Scheu
TE2: Nathan Marcus

Losing WR C.J. Duncan for the season due to injury was a blow to the receiver group, but this is a position at which the Commodores are expected to rotate several players anyway. Tight end is one of the strengths of this offense, and both Scheu and Marcus figure to have a major role in the passing game.

LT1: Blake Fromang
LT2: Bailey Granier

LG1: Jake Bernstein
LG2: Barrett Gouger

C1: Spencer Pulley
C2: Cole Hardin

RG1: Delando Crooks
RG2: Kevin McCoy

RT1: Will Holden
RT2: Bailey Granier

With a combined 75 games of experience, Pulley and Bernstein give the Commodores a veteran feel to the interior of their offensive line. But the Commodores received bad news on Thursday when starting LT Andrew Jelks was declared out for the season with a leg injury.

DEFENSE (3-4)

DT1: Caleb Azubike
DT2: Jonathan Wynn

NG1: Jay Woods
NG2: Nifae Lealao

DT1: Adam Butler
DT2: Torey Agee

Azubike will look to go out with a big senior season as a hand-in-the-grass pass rusher in the 3-4 scheme after splitting time between DT and OLB last season. Woods moved to nose to help replace 2014 starter Vince Taylor, and has the capability to create a nice 1-2 punch at the position with talented sophomore Lealao.

OLB1: Stephen Weatherly
OLB2: Landon Stokes

ILB1: Nigel Bowden
ILB2: Josh Smith

ILB1: Zach Cunningham
ILB2: Ja’karri Thomas

OLB1: Darreon Herring
OLB2: Nehemiah Mitchell

Considered by many to be the strength of the defense, the Commodores linebacker corps has a nice mix of edge rush excitement (Weatherly), a couple of talented young tacklers in the middle (Bowden and Cunningham), as well as experience (Herring).

CB1: Torren McGaster
CB2: Tre Bell

CB1: Taurean Ferguson
CB2: Tre Herndon

SS1: Andrew Williamson
SS2: Jahmel MacIntosh

FS1: Oren Burks
FS2: Jahmel MacIntosh

NB: Emmanuel Smith

The Commodores replaced all four starters in the secondary in 2014, and it showed at times. This group was learning on the job last season, and has the potential to make a significant step forward this season. McGaster has emerged as the team’s top corner, and Burks has serious upside after converting from linebacker last season.
