Derek Mason is staying mum on who’s winning Vanderbilt’s quarterback battle during fall camp.

The Commodores’ scrimmaged for the second time on Thursday, and Johnny McCrary, Patton Robinette and Stephen Rivers all were ‘solid’, according to Mason.

“At times they looked really good and at times a couple of poor decisions were made,” Mason told The Tennessean.

Vanderbilt running back Ralph Webb was more open about the quarterbacks, and he talked up the spark McCrary provided for the offense.

“Johnny McCrary got the offense going,” Webb said. “He scored a couple of touchdowns. I didn’t quite see who caught the ball because I was on the other side of the field, but when Johnny McCrary was in the game we got a spark going.”

All three quarterbacks are different, and each can provide strengths to the offense, depending on which direction offensive coordinator Karl Dorrell goes with it. I’ve maintained that McCrary is the future, and he’ll start if he’s ready; they won’t force it, especially when Robinette returns with the most experience.
