Saturday looks to be the biggest regular season game of Gus Malzahn’s coaching career with yet another No. 1 team traveling to the Plains. Two weeks ago, Auburn made top-ranked Georgia look more pretender than contender and will look to do the same to Alabama this weekend in the Iron Bowl.

The winner of the game will head to Atlanta to represent the SEC West in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia.

Malzahn spoke during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. Here’s a summary of what he had to say:

  • Opening comments: We got another big game at home, playing another No. 1 team that’s very talented. I guess they are No. 1 scoring defense, No. 7 in scoring offense and they have the best punter in college football. This will be a great challenge for us.
  • What improvements have you seen from Jalen Hurts? He was SEC Player of the Year as a freshman. He is one of the biggest weapons out there. He may be their best running back they have. He has the ability to throw players open.
  • I heard a wild story that you would be in Fayetteville at Noon. I laughed because I knew you would be on this call. Are you in your office right now? Yeah, I’m sitting at my desk (in Auburn) getting ready for practice.
  • Do you ever get caught up in all the rumors and speculation? We are so wrapped up in this game, I’m just excited about our team. This is for the SEC West Championship. I’m excited about it.
  • Does the intensity ever change in the Iron Bowl? You know, it’s something you have to experience for yourself. It took me that first time as a coordinator to get it. When you are playing for the West championship it’s bigger and better.
