Antonneous Clayton’s career never lived up to the hype in Gainesville and the Georgia native has made the decision to try his luck elsewhere.

The veteran Gator defender announced his decision on Monday via Twitter. Last season, his first playing for Dan Mullen and Todd Grantham, Clayton played in only three games and earned a redshirt. He appeared in 14 combined games the previous two seasons playing under head coach Jim McElwain, and defensive coordinators Geoff Collins and Randy Shannon.

It’s interesting to note that in his published statement upon his decision to leave Gainesville, Clayton thanked Florida coaches that no longer work at the school and didn’t mention any of the program’s current staffers.

Clayton arrived in Gainesville as the nation’s No. 27 overall prospect in the 2016 recruiting cycle and was an Under Armour All-American coming out of Dooley County High School in Vienna, Ga. He signed with Florida over offers from Alabama and Auburn, among others.

Here is the statement Clayton released announcing his departure from Florida’s program:

“First off I wanna thank God for the opportunities that were given to me ever since this thing started to kick off, for the past 3 years I’ve given the University of Florida everything I’ve gotten on and off the field and I’m forever grateful for Coach Mac, Coach Rumph and Coach Collins for recruiting me and allowing to come attend a wonderful university and meet my amazing teammates and amazing professors here at this university. After talking it over with my family, I’ve decided to transfer and see what my future holds in store for me and my son and my family. Please understand this decision is harder than it sounds but please understand I will be forever grateful for Gator Nation for their support and I wish you all the best, A.C. out.”

One of the coaches mentioned by Clayton in his statement was his primary recruiter at Florida, Chris Rumph. Rumph currently coaches at Tennessee under Jeremy Pruitt. Considering Tennessee is desperate for pass rush help heading into next season, it will be interesting to see if the Vols pursue Clayton, provided his a graduate transfer from Florida.
