Former Florida QB Tim Tebow may be off pursuing a minor league baseball career at the moment, but that doesn’t mean he’s not following his alma mater as the Gators prepare for the 2017 season.

In fact, he’s been paying close enough attention to the team’s quarterback battle between graduate transfer Malik Zaire and redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks that he has an opinion on who he thinks should start.

During a recent appearance on the 247Sports College Football Podcast, Tebow said he likes what he’s seen from Franks so far, but thinks Zaire will ultimately earn the starting job this fall (via NFL.com):

“I do think Feleipe Franks has a very bright future, but you have to lean a little bit towards Malik if he’s able to compete well and show his stuff in fall camp,” Tebow said. “This is a player I’ve been around, I know him pretty well, he’s pretty talented. But where he can change the game is with his athleticism with his legs. If you go back a couple of years ago to the way he played in the bowl game against LSU, and that was a really good LSU defense, you could see the potential that this kid has.

“Coach Mac is a very [good] coach, especially at coaching quarterbacks, and he’s going to do a little bit of what Dan Mullen does and play to his quarterback’s strengths and I think that could give Malik a chance to have a special season.”

Perhaps Tebow, who is a left-handed thrower like Zaire, sees a bit of himself in the Notre Dame transfer.

If Zaire does in fact earn the 2017 starting job, Gator fans hope they are reminded of Tebow, too.
