It has been a long time since Steve Spurrier returned home for a football game. In fact, the Head Ball Coach has not returned to see his Science Hill team play since his senior season in 1962.

That will change this weekend, as Spurrier will make the trek to Johnson City, Tenn., as Science Hill is planning to rename the field in his honor.

“Yeah, it’s going to be special,” said Spurrier, according to Tony Barnhart of Gridiron Now. “The athletic director there had been trying to get me to come back for years, but we never could find a date because I was always coaching.”

Spurrier also plans on participating in a book signing in Johnson City Friday before making the trip to Knoxville for Saturday’s Tennessee-Florida game between the two undefeated teams. During his coaching career, Spurrier had a 6-7 record in Neyland Stadium.

It wasn’t long ago Spurrier joked he had more wins in Neyland than a few of Tennessee’s coaches.

“Yep, looking forward to being back in Knoxville. Should be a lot of fun,” Spurrier said.
