Bulldog Nation woke up excited Sunday as Demetris Robertson, the last remaining unsigned five-star prospect from the 2016 recruiting class, was scheduled to finally make his college declaration announcement at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Unfortunately for Georgia, Robertson pulled a surprise and committed to Cal over the in-state Bulldogs.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart and his staff had made Robertson their top priority following National Signing Day and had been working hard to land his commitment. UGA even had two assistant coaches attend Robertson’s track meet Saturday, which seemed like a good sign. A day later, the decision had to have stung for Smart and company after all the work put into his recruitment. Losing out on an elite receiver prospect from inside the Peach State and considering the Bulldogs lack of established receivers currently on the roster only makes it that much worse.

All things considered, you have to give credit to Smart for sending his well wishes to Robertson after his commitment to Cal:

And it wasn’t just Smart, defensive assistant Kevin Sherrer echoed those sentiments after Robertson’s announcement:

Despite losing out on the final five-star in the class, Georgia still has plenty of reasons to be excited about its 2016 haul. The Bulldogs landed 3 five-star recruits, 10 four-star recruits and 7 three-star recruits. That’s a great class for any school, but considering Smart was hired in December and took his time assembling his staff, that’s an outstanding first class in for the new Georgia head coach.

Don’t expect too many five-stars to get away from the Bulldogs in the near future, in fact Robertson may be the last one to do so for a while.
