Dak Prescott is busy preparing to become the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback, which leaves his former coach with some preparations of his own to make.

Attempting to find Prescott’s replacement, Mississippi State began preseason camp with four quarterbacks competing for the starting job. The Bulldogs’ season opener is just days away, but it appears that Dan Mullen still isn’t sold on a quarterback.

Speaking with reporters after practice, Mullen revealed that junior Damian Williams and sophomore Nick Fitzgerald will both play against South Alabama.

“I was wanting complete clarity and having a defined No. 1,” said Mullen, according to the Associated Press. “But I don’t think there is one yet so I plan on us playing more than one in the first quarter.”

No team wants to enter the season with a murky situation at the game’s most important position, but the coaches clearly want to see both players in live action. Because Prescott was so consistent and durable in his time with the Bulldogs, neither Williams nor Fitzgerald have significant game experience.

“I think both of those guys have been thrown into tough situations, and both performed well in the situations they got thrown into,” Mullen said. “I want to give the guys an opportunity and see how they are going to perform on Saturday.”
