When former Mississippi State RB Josh Robinson ran for 198 yards against Kentucky in 2014, it was the last time a Bulldog back has eclipsed the 100-yard mark.

Traveling to Lexington this Saturday for a night game against the Wildcats, coach Dan Mullen’s squad is looking for more success against the SEC East foe.

Though current RB Aeris Williams looked good in a loss to BYU, recording 82 yards on 21 carries, Mullen told The Clarion-Ledger that success against Kentucky in the past has come from NFL-caliber backs:

“It was very player driven. I think Boobie (Dixon) had a huge game against them. He’s a pretty good player. We had O-line that year,” Mullen said.  “Vick (Ballard) had a big game. Josh (Robinson) a couple years ago had a big game. He did some spectacular runs.”

However, Mullen added, the Bulldogs’ ground game has been picking up in recent weeks. Still, he said they need to have more big plays from their running backs on Saturday night:

“It’s the big plays,” Mullen said. “Last two weeks, we have not hit explosive plays. It’s going to be hard to put up big numbers when you don’t have explosive plays. It’s a challenge.”

The 2-4 Bulldogs and 3-3 Wildcats will square off at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday. The game can be seen on the SEC Network.
