Redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch may be the frontrunner to win South Carolina’s starting quarterback job as a former prized four-star recruit, but coach Steve Spurrier is making sure competitors Perry Orth and Michael Scarnecchia have the opportunity to showcase what they have to offer as well during spring drills.

“This was real good for all three of those (quarterbacks), just learning how to get the ball out of their hand,” Spurrier said Saturday following a close scrimmage, South Carolina’s eighth practice this month. “It’s something they haven’t had to do before. It’s a quick, fast game, fast decisions by the quarterback. I think this was good for all of them.”

Orth, a junior and former walk-on, along with Scarnecchia were sharp Saturday, combining for 16 completions in 21 attempts. Mitch, equipped with the strongest arm of the three, went 6-for-11 and threw an interception.

Orth shared second-team duties with Mitch last season behind Dylan Thompson and says he willing to accept the back-up roll again if that’s how the battle shakes out.

“I am just trying to go out there every single day and compete as hard as I can and give it my best effort,” said Orth, according to The State. “Hopefully, maybe one day I’ll prove to the coaches that I could be the guy. We’ll see. I just have to come out every single day with the mindset of working as hard as I can and give myself the best possible chance.”

Spurrier says he wants to see a player take charge at the position and most importantly, make the right decisions. Without a reliable passer with experience (the trio has combined for just nine career attempts), South Carolina will focus on its ground game early this fall until there’s confidence at the position.
