Whether or not you thought coach Steve Spurrier’s impromptu press conference was prudent or a competitive coach letting his ego get the best of him, it’s difficult to question the timing.

This was an important recruiting weekend for South Carolina, and just days after the show of strength from Spurrier, the Gamecocks have added yet another commitment in four-star safety/outside linebacker P.J. Blue.

Blue is the third player to commit to South Carolina this weekend. He also joins four-star quarterback Brandon McIlwain and four-star receiver Bryan Edwards as the highest-rated players in the team’s ’16 class.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Blue should play strong safety for the Gamecocks, according to 247Sports. He picked South Carolina ahead of Alabama and Ole Miss, but also held offers from schools like Auburn, Clemson, Tennessee, Nebraska, Louisville and Missouri.

Blue is the No. 8 player from the state of Alabama and also becomes the ninth out-of-state commitment of 11 players. He transferred from Jemison High School (Jemison, Ala.) to Park Crossing High School (Montgomery, Ala.) this summer ahead of his senior season.

South Carolina’s 2016 class still ranks No. 12 in the SEC, but the team has closed a significant gap on schools like Arkansas and Mississippi State in front of them.

The Gamecocks have added three commitments in two days, including defensive back Chris Smith and JUCO offensive tackle Akeem Cooperwood.
