SEC Media Days just isn’t quite the same without the Ole Ball Coach, thankfully Steve Spurrier was gracious enough to call into the Paul Finebaum Show on the SEC Network Monday afternoon. The former South Carolina and Florida head coach came on to plug his new autobiography, which will be released August 30.

During his short media day appearance, Spurrier did not fail to disappoint, as he dropped a couple good nuggets of info to Finebaum.

When asked about what happened during the lead up to his final season in Columbia, Spurrier said he realized too late that he should not have come back to coach in 2015.

“Last season it was inevitable (the end of his coaching career),” Spurrier said. “I couldn’t reach the team and that’s the head coach’s job… That’s why I left midseason… My mistake was not leaving after beating Miami in the bowl game at the end of the 2014 season.”

But that wasn’t all from Spurrier, as one of the Gators’ most recognized alums nearly never made it to Gainesville and instead had planned to attend another SEC program.

“If they had National Signing Day like they do now, I probably would have went to Ole Miss,” Spurrier said. “I really liked (Rebel head) coach (Johnny) Vaught.”

Vaught of course was Ole Miss’ head coach from 1947-1970. During that span, the Rebels won three national titles and six conference titles. Ole Miss fans are now left to wonder what could have been had Spurrier chosen to attend school in Oxford.

Would the history of the SEC have been rewritten with the Ole Ball Coach making his mark in the SEC West?
