Just how big was Monday’s commitment of Kellen Mond for Texas A&M? One analyst compares his game to arguably the two best college quarterbacks in the game right now, so pretty big.

Without even taking into consideration the Aggies’ quarterback depth following the departures of two underclassmen this offseason, landing Mond could prove to be one of head coach Kevin Sumlin’s best recruiting hauls of his A&M career. Without a true playmaker under center, Sumlin’s offense has trended back into the middle of the pack in the SEC after finished No. 1 in both scoring offense and total offense in the league in  2012 and 2013.

According to ESPN National Recruiting Director Tom Luginbill, Aggies fans should be expecting another impact signal-caller once Mond arrives to College Station.

One of the comparisons Luginbill sees in Mond is Clemson junior quarterback Deshaun Watson:

The ball jumps out of his hand — he throws with authority. He can be a bit tense in his methods, looks like Deshaun Watson but not as smooth. He really gets a lot out of his arm on deep and intermediate throws. He displays nice RPMs, and the ball comes out quickly on underneath routes.

And another is Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes:

Accuracy on the move comes to mind with these two. They both have the ability to create on the move. They don’t always run when things break down, but they have the ability to keep their eyes downfield and throw on the run, or make off-balance throws back across the field.

While you are surely aware of Watson’s ability, if you are unfamiliar with Mahomes, go back and watch his performance against LSU in the 2015 Texas Bowl. Despite being outmanned and outgunned, Mahomes run circles around LSU’s pass rushers all night long and finished the game with 370 passing yards and four touchdowns.

If Mond can live up to that hype, Texas A&M should vault back to its status as the SEC’s most explosive offense in no time.
