It hasn’t taken Johnny Manziel long to prove his value to his new CFL coach.

June Jones, the former college and NFL coach, is currently the head coach of Manziel’s Hamilton Tigers Canadian Football League team. During his recent media availability, Jones vouched for his new quarterback and the skill set he provides to the CFL team by stating his opinion that Manziel will one day return to the NFL.

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised the last three weeks what a good teammate he is, how smart he is, how he sees the game,” Jones said according to David Newton of ESPN.com. “He should be playing in the National Football League and I believe he will when he gets through with us.”

That’s an interesting comment for Jones to make considering Manziel is currently the backup for the Hamilton team, the Tigers starter is former Oregon and Ole Miss starter Jeremiah Masoli. Manziel has played in the preseason for the Tigers but has yet to see the field in a regular season game.

Manziel signed a one-year deal with Hamilton but the club has the option to exercise a second year with the quarterback. According to Jones’ response, it appears the team is currently on a path to do just that. While Jones envisions Manziel making a return to the NFL, he doesn’t see it coming in the near future.

“It’ll take two years,” Jones continued. “They’re [NFL executives, coaches] waiting to see that he’s taken care of his off-the-field problems.”

The former Texas A&M Heisman Trophy winner last played in the NFL in 2015. He lasted only two seasons with Cleveland after the Browns selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
