On Saturday afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Texas A&M’s College Football Playoff hopes took a big hit with a 33-14 loss to the No. 1 Crimson Tide.

Though the Aggies now face an uphill battle to qualify for the four-team tournament, coach Kevin Sumlin told the Houston Chronicle that one loss doesn’t mean the Aggies are done just yet:

“That was a good football team we just played,” A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said. “We’ve got a lot of football to play. I haven’t done this very long, but I’ve done it long enough to know that anything can happen in this league. We all know it.”

QB Trevor Knight, a graduate transfer who made the College Football Playoff with Oklahoma last year as an 11-1 team, said it’s important for the Aggies to keep playing hard in their remaining five games:

“Don’t let this ruin our season,” he said after Saturday’s loss. “I was a part of a team last year that had a bad loss to Texas early on in the season and ended up winning out and going to the College Football Playoff. If you want to look ahead, and we somehow win the rest of our games and we come out 11-1, and our only loss is to the No. 1 team in the country, that’s what we’re going for.”

The schedule will play into A&M’s favor from here on out, with a Thanksgiving home game against LSU the only ranked opponent remaining on the slate of five games.

This Saturday, the Aggies host New Mexico State in what should be an easy victory to improve to 7-1.
