Heading into the start of fall camp in College Station, the No. 1 topic on everyone’s mind is the starting quarterback position for the Aggies. While Jimbo Fisher is going to get asked about the topic every time he meets with the media, now even the Texas A&M players are beginning to be peppered with questions regarding the ongoing competition heading into camp.

During Trayveon Williams’ media availability on Thursday evening, the Aggie running back was asked what the players on the team are specifically looking to see from Nick Starkel and Kellen Mond before Fisher names a starter.

“A guy that’s consistent. Consistent and a guy that can go out there and lead the team,” Williams answered. “A leader that can be the best deal for us on offense — offense and defense, the quarterback affects the whole game. With tempo, a guy that can control the whole team. We are just looking for that guy and whoever emerges, so be it.”

Williams was then asked how he’s personally gauged that from A&M’s quarterbacks this summer.

“Yeah, that’s something you always keep an eye on. We are brothers, and collectively, we are always together,” he continued. “The coaches aren’t always around us, so we are looking for a guy that can go out there and lead us. Throughout the (summer) 7-on-7s, both guys did that well so now we are out there competing to see who can take it.”

Aside from the growth he’s seen in leadership from both A&M signal callers, Williams also noted Starkel and Mond have grown to become more vocal, which was a necessary improvement coming off a disappointing 7-6 campaign in 2017.

“Both of them became more vocal and led us on and off the field. Calling more player-led practices and getting us together collectively and getting better on and off the field,” Williams added. “When we did the 7-on-7, both of those guys took charge and led vocally and physically and got us ready.”

Based on these responses, it’s easy to see why Fisher calls the competition “dead even” at the start of camp. Williams seems to share that sentiment after the first practice of the fall.
