Tennessee great Eric Berry is reportedly on his way to passing another former SEC standout for the title of highest-paid safety.

With the franchise tag last year, the Kansas City Chiefs paid Berry $10.8 million in a move that made the former Vol unhappy about not having a long-term deal. The Chiefs appear to be on the same page with Berry this offseason, and are working to make him the highest-paid player at his position (and avoid having him enter free agency).

Last season, former LSU S Tyrann Mathieu made $12.5 million with the Arizona Cardinals. Berry, who played in more games (16) than Mathieu (10), tallied up more impressive stats across the board. The fifth-time Pro Bowler and third-time first-team All Pro had 77 combined tackles, 9 passes defended and 4 interceptions (including two touchdowns), while Mathieu registered 35 combined tackles, 4 passes defended and an interception.
