If you missed Jeremy Pruitt’s Monday afternoon segment on the Paul Finebaum Show, you probably have a good idea of what you missed — the Tennessee coach giving away as little information as possible.

While Finebaum attempted to get Pruitt to reveal a few secrets, to no surprise to Tennessee fans, the Volunteer coach continued his habit of keeping things close to the vest. That led to a humorous exchange between the two but before that occurred, Pruitt did share some “updates” on his team during the program’s first training camp under his watch.

Here’s what Pruitt said when asked if he would name a starting quarterback before kickoff against West Virginia.

“I think the players will have a say in that,” Pruitt said. “I think when someone asserts himself, that’s clearly the best guy, if that’s next week or the week after — you know, until that happens, we will give the guys the same amount of reps and see how we develop from there.

“I think all our quarterbacks have arm talent, some are probably a little more mobile than others, but to me, all of them can make some throws they all do good things. The thing I’m really looking for is critical errors. There are one, two, three or four plays in a game you just can’t have. Whether its a turnover, sack in the red area, not being aware of the play clock. Taking all those things into account. All the guys have to limit mistakes.”

Question: How do you feel about what you’ve seen (from your team)?

“Well, I think we have a group of guys that are trying to buy in to what we are wanting to get done. Learning how to do it, the expectations I’ve seen in the last few days — some players stepping forward and demanding some things from their teammates, and it’s been different guys every day. That tells me, just watching, that guys are starting to pay the price, kinda bought in and what guys to raise their level of play. That’s a positive sign.”

Question: How do you change the mindset of the program heading into your first year?

“We’ve talked to our guys about the past not affecting the future. Everybody is starting over across the country so teams that won 14 or 15 games, not going to have any impact on this year’s games. We’ve got to control the present and I think our guys are trying to do that.”

This humorous exchange then went down as Pruitt was asked if he means to be so secretive with his replies to the media (as shared by Jesse Simonton of Volquest.com):

Pruitt’s final moment, to no surprise, involved what appeared to be a subtle recruiting nod to Tennessee’s pursuit of five-star Quavaris Crouch. The Tennessee coach did something similar at SEC Media Days when naming Charlotte as a city that he’s seen the power of Vol Nation take effect.
