Ray Ray McCloud may be the only prospect to take official visits to Clemson and Alabama over the past three years, but several — including Clemson star QB Deshaun Watson and Alabama star WR Calvin Ridley — entertained both programs through camp participation, unofficial visits or visits from coaches.

For the most part Clemson and Alabama have worked different sides of the region — Alabama works the Gulf Coast and Clemson works the Carolinas — but they occasionally cross paths in Georgia and with some prospects in Florida.

Things have changed in the past year or so as Clemson is more aggressively going after the nation’s top players and both programs are working the Eastern seaboard, especially in Virginia and Maryland.

Here are some players who will appear in Monday night’s championship game that both schools were in on recruiting at some point:

Mackensie Alexander, Clemson DB, 2013 (five stars): Alexander’s recruitment was a little strange from the start. It basically boiled down to Clemson, Auburn and Mississippi State but Alabama received an unofficial visit during the summer of 2012 and then-Alabama assistant Chris Rumph visited Alexander at his school in October, where it’s safe to assume the Tide’s recruitment of the talented cornerback ended.

Alvin Kamara, RB, 2013 (five stars): Clemson was Kamara’s first offer, and Alabama and Georgia were his second and third (unclear of which program offered first but they were reported on the same day). Kamara took multiple unofficial visits to both programs and participated in camps at both schools. Alabama, however, got the official visit and the commitment. Eventually he left the program, went to junior college and signed with Tennessee.

Deshaun Watson, Clemson QB, 2014 (five stars): Clemson was on Watson from the go, but he did take an unofficial visit to Alabama in 2011 for a game and Alabama offered him about a year and a half later — over a year after he had committed to Clemson. Watson didn’t take any more documented trips to Tuscaloosa and it doesn’t appear that the Tide coaches visited him.

Christian Miller, Alabama LB, 2014 (four stars): Clemson was the first to offer this South Carolina prospect and he took unofficial visits to both schools for games in November of 2012. Miller committed to Florida and Clemson moved on, but Alabama stayed on Miller and got him to flip during the summer of 2013.

Calvin Ridley, Alabama WR, 2015 (five stars): Ridley had a top five of Alabama, Clemson, FSU, Miami and Tennessee before committing to Alabama in April of 2014. Ridley took his first unofficial to Alabama in Nov. 2013 for the LSU game and Clemson eventually offered the receiver in January of 2014.

Deon Cain, Clemson WR, 2015 (five stars): Alabama offered Cain in early February 2014 and Billy Napier went to visit Cain on behalf of the Tide during the spring evaluation period in 2014. Cain, however, committed to Clemson a few weeks later.

Albert Huggins, Clemson DE/DT, 2015 (four stars): Clemson offered Huggins in 2012 and Alabama followed in March of 2013. But Huggins seemed enamored with Clemson early and took several unofficial vists before committing.

Ray Ray McCloud, Clemson WR/ATH, 2015 (four stars): McCloud received an offer from Alabama during the 2014 spring evaluation period but committed to Clemson over the summer of 2014 after attending their camp. Keeping McCloud’s commitment wasn’t easy; McCloud took at least one undocumented unofficial visit to Florida and an official visit to Alabama two weeks before signing day. He stuck with Clemson.

Jake Fruhmorgen, Clemson WR, 2015 (four stars): Fruhmorgen’s father, John Fruhmorgen, played at Alabama in the 1980s. Clemson offered Jake Fruhmorgen during the spring evaulation period in 2013 and Alabama offered Jake after he attended their camp in June of 2013. There never seemed to be a match with Jake and his father’s alma mater, however, and after visits to two Clemson junior day events, Jake Fruhmorgen committed to the Tigers.

Austin Bryant, Clemson DE, 2015 (four stars): Bryant was offered by both schools, Clemson came in early, during the spring of 2013 and Alabama offered late January of 2014. Bryant did not attend an Alabama camp and eventually committed to Clemson after multiple unofficial visits there.

Mekhi Brown, Alabama DE, 2015 (four stars): Clemson and Alabama offered Brown within two months of each other. He attended summer camps at both programs and took unofficial visits to both schools in 2013. Clemson seemed to fall off Brown’s radar after his unofficial there and he took several more visits to Alabama before making a commitment there.

Adonis Thomas, Alabama LB, 2015 (four stars): Thomas attended Clemson’s summer camp and took an unofficial before he was really on Alabama’s radar. The Tide offered Thomas in March of 2014 and he took an unoffical to the campus a month later. Clemson seemed to back off in 2014 and Thomas actually committed to Florida before the 2014 season. He backed out a few months later and committed to Alabama in July.
