Earlier this offseason, Georgia freshman QB D’Wan Mathis was complaining of headaches to the Bulldogs’ training staff.

Fortunately, they took him seriously, and it was discovered that he needed emergency brain surgery to remove a cyst. Obviously, after something like that, Mathis’s health will be the most important thing, with football taking a major backseat.

On Tuesday at SEC Media days, coach Kirby Smart gave a positive update on Mathis, saying he’s back in classes and workouts, crediting Ron Courson and the Dawgs’ staff for handling the situation well. He also discussed a return, but said there’s no timetable on Mathis at this point (via 247Sports):

“D’Wan is doing very well. Ron (Courson) and his staff, I think it’s very well-documented how well Ron and his staff managed D’Wan and the things that they’ve done. D’Wan is back in classes, he’s back in workouts, he’s doing a really good job for us…” Smart said.

“…As far as putting a date on his exact return where he’s 100 percent, I don’t know what that’s going to be. I can’t even speculate right now with the surgery he had. We’re certainly going to be very cautious.”

Mathis’s father credits the UGA staff with saving his son’s life. Thankfully, it does seem as if he’ll make a full recovery.

The Bulldogs are going to continue to move him along slowly, though, and that’s absolutely the right move following such a serious procedure.
