This weekend’s game between Ole Miss and LSU will be fascinating on a number of fronts.

For one, it’s a battle between two tough SEC West foes trying to win the division. There will be plenty of talent on the field Saturday evening — with potential high draft picks on both sides.

In addition, it will pit LSU interim head coach Ed Orgeron against a program he once coached.

According to a report from The Advocate, former Ole Miss AD Pete Boone — the then-athletic director in Oxford — spoke about the decision to relieve Orgeron of his duties:

“I will say, that I believe that the time Ed was here at Ole Miss was a real good time for him. Unfortunately, he had to have some experience being a head coach, and that comes from doing it. He just didn’t fit at that time for us.”

Orgeron went a combined 10-25 in three seasons — including a ghastly 3-21 record in conference play.

His eclectic — and sometimes bizarre method of coaching — has been dialed down considerably from where it once was. Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze — who was given his first college job on Orgeron’s staff in 2005 — feels as if the Rebels weren’t far away from being a very good team:

“People are not patient. I really think that we had recruited well under Ed here, and it was close to turning a corner.”
