Some streaks are more important than others.

Florida, for instance, has beaten Kentucky 29 consecutive times, the longest active win streak over one opponent in college football. But that’s common SEC knowledge.

Others are more obscure … until now.

We’ve already taken a look at some interesting SEC East streaks. Here’s one streak every SEC West team will try to extend in 2016.

Alabama

Streak: Ranked in the Associated Press Poll’s preseason top five every year since 2009
Skinny:  Entering 2016, Nick Saban’s squad has been ranked in the AP preseason top five for seven straight years. Coincidentally, Bama has been ranked in the top three going into the last six seasons. Alabama has another notable streak going. The Crimson Tide hasn’t lost since falling 43-37 to Ole Miss at home in Week 3 of last season. That 12-game win streak is the longest active run in the FBS.

Auburn

Streak: Seven straight seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher
Skinny: Ben Tate kicked off this streak, the longest for any team in SEC history, in 2009. Cam Newton and Michael Dyer kept it going in 2010, Dyer did it again in 2011, Tre Mason joined the group in 2012, Nick Marshall and Mason did it in 2013, Cameron Artis-Payne hit the milestone in 2014 and Peyton Barber extended the run last year.

Arkansas

Streak: Leading the SEC in sacks allowed for three straight seasons
Skinny: The Razorbacks surrendered just eight in 2013, and 14 in both 2014 and last season. This explains why Bret Bielema likes huge offensive linemen so much. They protect the quarterback and produce 1,000-yard rushers year after year. The Hogs also have another active streak going. They scored at least 28 points in each of their last seven games last season to match Alabama and lead the SEC. In case you were wondering, Arkansas opens this season at home against Louisiana Tech.

LSU

Streak: At least eight wins in 16 straight seasons
Skinny: This streak, which dates back to Nick Saban’s first season as head coach in Baton Rouge in 2000, matches Tennessee’s run of eight-win seasons from 1989-2004 for the longest stretch in SEC history. If that doesn’t grab you, the Tigers enter 2016 having won 52 straight non-conference, regular-season games, the longest such streak in the country. LSU’s last such loss occurred in its 2002 season opener against Virginia Tech, a 26-8 defeat. That streak will be on the line when the Tigers take on Wisconsin at Lambeau Field on Sept. 3.

Mississippi State

Streak: Reaching a bowl in six straight seasons
Skinny: To put this streak in perspective, the Bulldogs’ longest run of bowl appearances before this current one was three from 1998-2000 under head coach Jackie Sherrill. While compiling this streak, Mississippi State has also won at least nine games in back-to-back years for the first time in school history, including 10 victories in 2014, tied for an MSU single-season record. To give this run a little context, Dan Mullen has led the Bulldogs to three of their seven all-time seasons with at least nine wins. The NCAA forfeited the Bulldogs’ nine wins in 1976.

Ole Miss

Streak: Chad Kelly’s consecutive games with a touchdown pass
Skinny: The Ole Miss quarterback enters his senior season on a run of 13 straight games with a touchdown pass, which covers every contest in 2015. Of course, fans in Oxford can also brag about two straight wins over Alabama. The Rebels have never beaten the Crimson Tide three years in a row, and in fact, no team has with Nick Saban as head coach in Tuscaloosa.

Texas A&M

Streak: Seven straight seasons with a bowl berth
Skinny: The Aggies’ previous longest run of bowl games was five, which it accomplished two separate times (1997-2001 and 1989-93). Another A&M streak to watch out for is whether the Aggies will be ranked in the AP top 10 at some point this season, something they have accomplished for five straight years entering 2016. They’ve had two other such runs – from 1974-78 and 1991-95.
