Rush Propst is well known in SEC circles, first as the head coach at Hoover (Ala.) High School and then Colquitt County (Ga.).

He’s sent a number of players to SEC schools on full football scholarships — players like Chad Jackson (Florida), John Parker Wilson (Alabama) and Ryan Pugh (Auburn).

He also was featured on the reality MTV show “Two-A-Days,” which followed Hoover High School for two seasons. He’s claimed six high school state titles.

He also has a lengthy history of controversy, including three children out of wedlock and a grade-changing scandal. Friday night, during a high school football playoff game, Propst added to that list when he headbutted his own helmet-clad player on the sideline, opening a huge gash in his head.

His team, Colquitt County, beat Mill Creek, 52-31, to advance to the 6A state championship game.

Said Propst after the game, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “I’ll tell you what. That was a dad gum intense football game. That game was not for the weak or the young. That was big boy football right there. You saw a bunch of good football players out on that field tonight. We got ‘em and Mill Creek’s got ‘em, too.”

Full disclosure: The author attended Hoover High School as an athlete during a portion of the Propst tenure.
