Through five weeks of the 2015 season, 17 conference games are in the books.

Week 5 victimized two previously-unbeaten teams (Georgia and Ole Miss), leaving the SEC with just three remaining (Florida, LSU and Texas A&M) entering Week 6.

There are four conference games on the slate this week, with Ole Miss and Mississippi State playing non-conference opponents while Auburn, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt enjoy bye weeks.

Here are some things we can learn about the SEC championship picture from those games:

  • Arkansas at Alabama: The Crimson Tide’s win at Georgia last week not only saved its chance at winning the SEC West, it re-affirmed Alabama’s status as one of the favorites to win the division. The Crimson Tide still has games to come against unbeaten teams LSU and Texas A&M. But first, Alabama must take care of business against an Arkansas team that just last week proved it can win a conference game in a tough road environment. And speaking of the Razorbacks, it is worth noting that a win here would make them 2-1 in league play and put them back on the map in the SEC West race.
  • Florida at Missouri: This game could turn out to be one of the most important SEC East games played all season. With three early conference wins, the Gators have positioned themselves nicely as the only unbeaten team in the SEC East. A win at Missouri would give them a two-game lead against the Tigers with a tiebreaker effectively making it three games, bringing them one step closer to claiming a trip to Atlanta in Jim McElwain’s first season in Gainesville. As important as that makes things seem for Florida, this game may actually be more important to the Tigers’ chances of repeating as the SEC East champions for a third year in a row. A win puts them right back in the thick of the race with a 2-1 record and a game against Georgia ahead of them, but a loss here makes it tough to envision a scenario that puts the Tigers in Atlanta.
  • South Carolina at LSU: With South Carolina likely out of the hunt in the SEC East at 0-3 in conference play, let’s focus this discussion on LSU, which holds a share of the lead in the SEC West with Texas A&M. The Tigers need to be careful about the circumstances surrounding this game. They’re the better team, but any time a team is faced with adversity at home and is sent away to represent a group of people, strange things can happen. All of the pressure is on LSU in an impromptu home game of sorts, so while the Tigers are rightfully the favorite to remain unbeaten in SEC play, there is a chance that this game could make a huge impact on the SEC West race if the Gamecocks turn in an inspired effort.
  • Georgia at Tennessee: This game will have an impact on the SEC East race no matter the outcome. If Georgia wins, it effectively eliminates Tennessee from the discussion, sticking the Vols with an 0-3 record from the outset of the conference season. If Tennessee wins, it puts a serious hurt on Georgia, which was the consensus favorite to win the division. It would drop the Bulldogs to 2-2 in SEC play, and could potentially put them two games behind in the race pending the outcome of the Florida/Missouri matchup. A win for Georgia pushes its record to 3-1 and could give the Bulldogs a share of the division lead.
