The SEC East race turned a big corner in Week 4 with Tennessee beating Florida in dramatic comeback fashion. The win gives the Vols an early advantage over one of their biggest competitors and confidence heading into next weekend’s trip to Athens.

Speaking of Georgia, the Bulldogs did not represent well against the SEC West and appear to have some serious holes to patch up. That was the only loss outside of the division, as both Missouri and Vanderbilt took care of business.

Let’s take a look at what we learned from the SEC East this weekend.

Florida Gators

Week 4 result: Lost to Tennessee 38-28

What we learned: It was a tale of two halves for Florida on Saturday. After jumping out to a 21-0 lead in the first half, the Gators watched as Tennessee went on to score the next 38 points and win this matchup for the first time since 2004. Quarterback Austin Appleby found a rhythm in the first half, but never managed to gain it again after halftime. He threw for 296 yards and 3 touchdowns with a pick on 23 completions.

Antonio Callaway was Appleby’s favorite target and caught 4 passes for 134 yards. The sophomore receiver had a pair of big mistakes on special teams, however, once dropping a punt inside of the 2-yard line and calling for a fair catch at the 1-yard line during Florida’s comeback attempt. The Gators are clearly a talented team, especially on defense, but now find themselves looking up at Tennessee in the SEC East.

Georgia Bulldogs

Week 4 result: Lost to Ole Miss 45-14

What we learned: Georgia looked outmatched from the start against Ole Miss. The secondary was picked apart by Chad Kelly and the Rebels’ receivers, who hooked up for several explosive plays in the win. Jacob Eason had an inconsistent afternoon in his second SEC road start.

He threw a pass into double coverage that was picked off and returned for a touchdown in the first quarter. Eason also delivered some very pretty passes, but drops continue to be a major problem for Georgia’s receivers. After struggling the past two weeks, the wheels fell off Saturday.

Kirby Smart’s first true test as head coach will be getting his team to turn the corner ahead of next weekend’s SEC East matchup with Tennessee.

Kentucky Wildcats

Week 4 result: Defeated South Carolina 17-10

What we learned: Mark Stoops needed a win, and Kentucky delivered by grinding out a 17-10 victory over South Carolina. It wasn’t a pretty win by any means, but the Wildcats defeated the Gamecocks for the third season in a row.

Kentucky’s defense, which has been a problem all season, took a step forward on Saturday. They held South Carolina to 24 yards and surrendered only one first down in the first quarter. Late in the fourth quarter, the Wildcats stood firm and helped seal the victory. Stanley Williams and Benjamin Snell Jr. led the way on offense, rushing for 123 yards and 73 yards, respectively, with a touchdown each.

Missouri Tigers

Week 4 result: Defeated Delaware State 79-0

What we learned: After a difficult second half in last week’s loss to Georgia, Missouri’s offense has regained its mojo. The Tigers came out of the gates at a blistering pace, scoring on nine of their 10 first-half possessions and setting a new school record for most points scored in a half with 58.

Drew Lock continues to emerge in his sophomore season, throwing for 402 yards and 5 touchdowns. He leads the SEC with 1,508 passing yards and 14 touchdown passes. He’s on pace to break Tim Couch’s SEC single-season record for passing yards (4,275 in 1998).

Emanuel Hall, Dimetrios Mason and J’Mon Moore, who had 4 touchdown catches, each topped the 100-yard receiving mark and Damarea Crockett led all running backs with 115 yards and 2 scores on the ground. Missouri’s defense held Delaware State to 140 yards of offense, collected 4 turnovers and pitched a shutout. Not a bad day as the Tigers tuned up for this Saturday’s game against LSU.

 South Carolina Gamecocks

Week 4 result: Lost to Kentucky 17-10

What we learned: Another game, another poor offensive showing for South Carolina. The Gamecocks scored only one touchdown in the first half, although it did come at the end of the team’s best drive. Brandon McIlwain did not provide the spark at quarterback that he did last weekend, throwing for 177 yards and completing only 50 percent of his passes. He didn’t receive much support from the running game, as South Carolina managed to gain only 91 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries. Defensively, the Gamecocks also had problems with the run game, allowing Kentucky to rush for 216 yards and a pair of scores. Will Muschamp’s team appears to still be struggling to find its identity this season.

Tennessee Volunteers

Week 4 result: Defeated Florida 38-28

What we learned: For the first time in 11 years, Tennessee emerged victorious against Florida. The Volunteers faced the possibility of another embarrassing loss when they entered halftime down 21-3, but they mounted a furious second-half comeback and executed in all phases of the game.

Dobbs helped spur the rally in the third quarter, completing 7 of 9 passes for 126 yards and 2 touchdowns with a pick in the quarter.

He finished the night with a career-high 319 yards, 4 touchdowns and a pair of interceptions, adding another 80 yards and a score on the ground.

Jauan Jennings and Josh Malone each had noteworthy performances, combining for 202 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tennessee’s defense made the difference in the second half. The Vols forced three-and-outs from Florida’s offense until midway in the fourth quarter. They slammed the door shut and took a big step forward in the division race.

Vanderbilt Commodores

Week 4 result: Defeated Western Kentucky 31-30

What we learned: Vanderbilt never led through four quarters against Western Kentucky, but managed to take the game into overtime with Ralph Webb’s game-tying touchdown run as time expired. The Commodores took their first lead of the game on their first possession in extra time and managed to prevent the Hilltoppers’ potential game-winning two-point conversion to seal the victory. Kyle Shurmer wasn’t perfect at quarterback, but he managed to do just enough, throwing for 279 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Ralph Webb was once again Vanderbilt’s workhorse, carrying the ball 27 times for 95 times with 3 touchdowns.
