The Volunteers got some good news on the recruiting front Wednesday, as top North Carolina defensive lineman prospect Matthew Bulter pledged his commitment to Tennessee’s 2017 recruiting class during a ceremony held at his high school. Butler also played tight end in high school but best projects as a defensive tackle at the collegiate level.

Butler announced the decision at his ceremony in a unique way, as he unwrapped a Christmas present that contained a Tennessee hat.

The 6-foot-4, 265-pound Garner Magnet, North Carolina product is rated as a four-star prospect by 247Sports, the No. 16 defensive tackle in the nation as well as the No. 7 overall prospect from North Carolina. Butler chose the Vols over scholarship offers from South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Duke, Penn State, Miami, North Carolina and NC State, among others.

Following his standout high school career, his Garner Magnet team went 12-2 in 2016, Butler was chosen as a participant in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, an all-star event for prospects from North and South Carolina. During the last three high school seasons, Butler registered 100 tackles-for-loss and 46 sacks – 26 of his sacks came in his senior season alone. The lineman also registered an additional 36 quarterback hurries this season.

Get an idea of what type of player Tennessee’s defensive front could be getting by taking a look at Butler’s senior season highlight reel:

Butler pushes Tennessee’s 2017 recruiting class to 26 total commitments and he becomes the sixth defensive lineman to join the class – if you include tight end/lineman LaTrell Bumphus and athlete Marquez Bembry. If Tennessee fails to land elite Alabama lineman prospect LaBryan Ray, expect Butler to be the last defensive lineman the Vols land in this recruiting class.
