To say it’s imperative Vanderbilt needs to start the season 1-0 is a slight understatement.

College football is all about momentum, and the Commodores need to create some positive momentum and soon.

It starts Week 1 against Western Kentucky.

WKU has built an impressive resume in non-conference games over the last four years, going 13-4 with wins over Kentucky and Navy, and the program has transitioned well six years into its move up from FCS.

Make no mistake about it — WKU’s offense could set records this season. It’s experienced, talented and aggressive.

With Derek Mason in full control of the Commodores’ defense this season, his unit will be tested from the get-go. The Hilltoppers will throw it all over the yard with sixth-year returning quarterback Brandon Doughty, who received an extra year of eligibility by the NCAA. The quarterback is the reigning Conference USA Player of the Year, and he led the nation with 4,830 passing yards and 49 tou chdown passes in 2014. So, it’s no mystery how WKU will try and exploit the Commodores’ defense, especially since head coach Jeff Brohm comes from the Bobby Petrino school of offense.

WKU’s offense will certainly be a force, but it doesn’t come without weaknesses. Although the Hilltoppers return some experience, the one area where Vanderbilt can take advantage of WKU is on the line of scrimmage. Vanderbilt’s defensive line and outside linebackers have to be very disruptive and get Doughty out of rhythm. The Hilltoppers have to replace their starting center and right tackle this year, and the Commodores are expected to build on last year’s solid defensive unit.

Should the defense allow WKU to move the football at will and give up first downs — and furthermore, points — it’ll be tough for the Commodores’ offense to keep up, already knowing the limitations.

We saw what negative momentum can do last year when Vanderbilt lost to Temple to open the season, and the Commodores must prevent that from happening Thursday night.
