There will again be plenty of offseason questions around the Southeastern Conference as it relates to the quarterback position. With that, here are five signal callers from the Class of 2016 to keep an eye on as it relates to winning a starting job this coming season.

Please note that because of the return of starter Chad Kelly, five-star Ole Miss signee Shea Patterson is not on this list.

1. Jacob Eason, Georgia: Eason is the top-ranked pro-style quarterback in the class, has already enrolled at UGA and will compete for the starting job straight out of the gates. He’s got more raw talent than any of the quarterbacks on the Bulldogs roster and is an excellent fit for what new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney likes to do scheme-wise. Plus, chances are he will have a great running game to keep the pressure off of him.

2. John Franklin III, Auburn: Gus Malzahn has brought in another junior college quarterback twice before — with Cam Newton when Malzahn was the offensive coordinator and Nick Marshall when he was the head coach — and it has worked out quite well. Franklin will have to win the job this spring for this to be in play, but the position is wide open.

3. Brandon McIlwain, South Carolina: McIlwain is mature beyond his years and already has impressed the Gamecocks staff in offseason workouts and on the baseball diamond, where he will play for South Carolina this season. With a first-year coaching staff, Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper, McIlwain is on equal footing with the other South Carolina quarterbacks in terms of learning the system.

4. Feleipe Franks, Florida: Franks is a bit raw, but he’s 6-foot-6, 220-pounds and has the type of big arm that Gators head coach Jim McElwain can use to his advantage in the vertical passing game. The question is can Franks, who has a long way to go to get ready before the season, have accelerated development? Or will the time crunch not allow him to win the starting job? The guess here is we see Franks this season, but perhaps not right away.

5. Stephen Johnson II, Kentucky: This is a bit of an outlier because Johnson was such an under-the-radar signing by the Wildcats out of the College of the Desert in California. Can he beat out Drew Barker? On film, he does some things better than the favorite to win the UK starting job and he also has more top-end speed in the run game. This was a “sneaky good” signing by Kentucky and it would not surprise at all to see Johnson rocket up the depth chart in Lexington in short order.
