Could the College Football Playoff selection committee really put two teams from the same conference in its top four?

One national college football writer thinks so.

CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm ranked Alabama No. 1 and Texas A&M No. 4 in his prediction for the initial CFP Rankings, which will officially be revealed around 7 p.m. ET tonight live on ESPN. Both LSU and the Crimson Tide appeared in the first round of CFP rankings last year, so that’s not totally out of the question.

Making the case for Alabama isn’t difficult — the Crimson Tide have been No. 1 in the AP Top 25 all season, and many believe it to be the best team in the nations so far.

The Aggies, however, are among a batch of one-loss teams fighting to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Texas A&M has arguably the best loss of any contender, a 33-14 defeat at Alabama.

But this is ultimately just one person’s prediction of how the selection committee will order teams. We’ll find out the real rankings later tonight.
