Have you ever wondered what should be considered the “biggest upset” in the history of FBS football?

While opinions on that topic often can be subjective, one of our friends over at Reddit College Football attempted to insert some numbers into the discussion.

Ken Massey is a mathematician and sports statistician that puts out an annual report called the Massey Ratings, which can be found at masseyratings.com.

Part of Massey’s annual report is a rating of the largest upsets of that particular season. Here is a look at the 2015 results, for example.

Reddit user “tmart12” decided to use those annual upset reports to compile an all-time list of FBS upsets, ranked by the upset score that the Massey ratings assigned to the game.

The results?

Temple’s 28-24 upset of Virginia Tech back in 1998 scores as the largest FBS upset of all-time, followed by James Madison’s 21-16 win against the Hokies in 2010.

As far as the SEC is concerned, current members of the league show up on the Top 50 list eight different times.

Here’s a look at each game:

9. Sept. 20, 1986: Miami (OH) 21, LSU 12
10. Sept. 12, 1981: Georgia Tech 24, Alabama 21
13. Oct. 17, 1970: Southern Miss 30, Ole Miss 14
24. Nov. 23, 2013: Georgia Southern 26, Florida 20
26. Sept. 25, 1971: Tulsa 21, Arkansas 20
27. Oct. 13, 2001: Auburn 23, Florida 20
33. Oct. 20, 1990: The Citadel 38, South Carolina 35
T-39. Sept. 19, 1970: Texas A&M 20, LSU 18

Some things to note:

  • Arkansas was not in the SEC at the time of its loss to Tulsa.
  • South Carolina was not in the SEC at the time of its 1990 loss to The Citadel.
  • South Carolina’s 2015 loss to The Citadel was not included on the list.
  • Auburn’s 2001 win against Florida is the only true conference game on the list that qualifies, as the Texas A&M vs. LSU game was prior to the Aggies joining the league.

How accurate do you think this list is? Are there SEC upsets that didn’t rate high enough on the Massey ratings scale that belong in the discussion?
