Ten years can be an eternity in the coaching ranks. The comings and goings in that profession can be a daunting task to even keep up with. But we thought it would be fun to look back a decade ago and see where each head football coach in the SEC was, back in 2007.

Alabama (Nick Saban) — Hired on Jan. 3, 2007 after a tense 38 days of courtship, after repeatedly professing to the media that he would not be the next head football coach at Alabama. He was, and Tide fans haven’t yet stopped smiling.

Arkansas (Bret Bielema) — Starting his second season as head coach at Wisconsin after going 12-1 in his first year there and finishing with a No. 5 ranking in the Coaches Poll, Bielema spent the next six seasons chasing but never equaling that success and took the Arkansas job prior to the 2013 season.

Auburn (Gus Malzahn) — Beginning his first of two seasons at Tulsa as its assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator, Malzahn quickly moved up the ladder with his innovative offense.

Florida (Jim McElwain) — After one season as quarterbacks coach with the NFL Oakland Raiders, McElwain took the job at Fresno State in 2007 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He stayed there just one season before moving over to Alabama in the same capacity for the next four seasons.

Georgia (Kirby Smart) — Following Saban from the Miami Dolphins, Smart went to Alabama in 2007 as the assistant head coach/DB coach. He would go on to become Alabama’s defensive coordinator for the next eight seasons.

Kentucky (Mark Stoops) — The defensive coordinator/DBs coach at Arizona in 2007, Stoops coached DBs for 20 seasons, with stops at USF, Wyoming, Houston, Miami and Florida State before becoming the Wildcats head coach in 2013.

LSU (Ed Orgeron) — In his third and final season as head coach at Ole Miss, Orgeron’s Rebels slumped to 3-9 and went winless in the SEC. Times have certainly changed for the native Louisianan.

Mississippi State (Dan Mullen) — An offensive guru, Mullen was in his third of four seasons at Florida as the Gators’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2007 before becoming head coach at Mississippi State in 2009.

Missouri (Barry Odom) — Still a young pup in 2007, Odom was the Director of Football Operations at Missouri. He learned the ropes over nine years in the program in one capacity or another, eventually leading up to being named head coach after a brief stint with Memphis.

Ole Miss (Hugh Freeze) — In his second of two seasons at Ole Miss in 2007 as a tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, Freeze cut his teeth as head coach at Lambuth and Arkansas State, before returning as the Rebels’ head coach.

South Carolina (Will Muschamp) — Another Saban disciple, Muschamp broke away and in 2007 was in his second season at Auburn as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Prior to that he was with Saban at LSU from 2001-04 and went with him to the NFL Miami Dolphins the following year.

Tennessee (Butch Jones) — The year 2007 marked the first season for Jones as a head coach. He spent three successful seasons at Central Michigan, going 21-3 in Mid-American Conference play. He then coached three seasons at Cincinnati before taking over at Tennessee in 2013.

Texas A&M (Kevin Sumlin) — In his fifth and final season at Oklahoma, Sumlin was the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2007. He got his first job as a head coach the following year at Houston before coming to College Station before the 2012 season.

Vanderbilt (Derek Mason) — In 2007, Mason took a job with the NFL Minnesota Vikings as the assistant defensive backs coach. It was a position he held for three seasons before returning to the college ranks at Stanford, which led to his first job as head coach at Vanderbilt in 2014.
